Our Featured Mumpreneur this time is Amanda Finan of Amanda Christie Designs.
When did you start your business and why?
Spring 2013. In 2012 I took time out to finish our house build and was looking for a particular style of lamp but couldn’t find one so I decided to make one myself.
It wasn’t successful but it did bring out the artistic side of my nature which had been buried for years.
I began making different items and realised that I enjoyed it and there might be a market for what I was doing.
What is your role within your business?
I basically do everything.
What do you like doing most in your business?
I love researching ideas and bringing them to reality. I love making unusual things.
What do you like doing least in your business?
Doing my accounts.

How did you come up with the idea for your business?

What is the best thing about being a mumpreneur?
Well, I am really a Granpreneur. I love the flexibility it offers.
What is the worst thing about being a mumpreneur?
It can be very lonely and it would be nice to have someone to work alongside.
What is your biggest challenge juggling family life with running a business?
Making time for family and friends, household chores i.e. ironing.
What business training did you have before or since you started your business?
I worked as a wedding co-ordinator in the hotel industry.
How has this helped you with growing your business?
I can’t say that it has.
Have you received financial help in setting up in business? If yes from whom? E.g – bank, investor, etc.
How important do you see networking to help your business?
Hugely important. There are so many demands from social media for customer’s attention that the
personal interaction is best.
What Social Media networks do you use to promote your business and how effective have they been?
Do you think there is enough support for mothers who are also business people?
Not at all. Unless people have the support of family and friends, then you are on your own.
What are the biggest challenges facing you right now?
Streamlining my range of products. Rebranding and getting into the retail market. Cash flow.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Stay strong and believe in yourself.
What advice would you give to other mothers who are thinking about starting a business?
Know how hard it’s going to be and do it anyway.
